Join Bark on the 2nd Sunday of every month as we explore an upcoming timber sale on Mt. Hood or surrounding public lands. We meet at the Daily Grind, in Southeast Portland at Hawthorne & 40th. If you can drive, great, if not, we'll make sure you have a ride. Check the calendar for upcoming hikes.

We will explore an upcoming timber sale, look at logging operations in progress, and rejuvenate ourselves with a visit to old-growth groves in the area. We will also discuss what you can do to stop the timber sale, and some of the broader issues involved with the logging of our public lands.

At least once a year our Bark-about is a snowshoe trip, and at least once a year we visit a planned sale on state forest lands, usually in the coast range. Bark-abouts are a great learning experience. Even Barkers who have been at it for years learn something from the comments of everyone participating. We encourage all to attend, even if you have never been involved with a timber sale in your life.

Bark-abouts are usually off trail, so they can be much more difficult than your average trail hike. While mileage is usually short and much of the hike may be moderate difficulty, there is often a difficult portion of the hike, whether it be a steep ridge climb, multiple stream crossings or just extensive downed logs.

Come prepared for a full day hike, with water, lunch, the 10 essentials and appropriate clothing (even when it’s not raining you can get soaked walking off trail through the brush).

If you have never participated in a Bark-about before, we strongly suggest you call Bark at 503-331-0374 for more details and information, or use our contact form.
