General Responsibilities: Canvassers would be responsible for contacting the public at their homes in assigned neighborhoods. Their function is to build Bark’s membership, promote upcoming hikes and television shows, fundraise, and motivate supporters to get involved

Qualifications
• Have a dedicated commitment to environmental preservation
• Well organized
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Positive attitude and good sense of humor
• Self-starter and ability to complete tasks without direct supervision
• No experience necessary, but experienced candidates eligible for leadership positions

Compensation: $8.95/hr. + 40% of fundraising amount over goal.

Speaker’s Bureau Internship

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
The Speaker’s Bureau Internship will provide a great opportunity for someone interested in public speaking and presentation skills. Communicating clearly and providing high-quality presentations is a key element in our Mt. Hood Old-Growth Campaign. The communication skills gained in this internship is a strong resume builder not to mention a lot of fun too! The Speaker’s Bureau Intern will work with the Outreach Coordinator to implement a comprehensive outreach strategy through the Speaker’s Bureau – a program designed to educate and activate the public through dynamic PowerPoint presentations. This position will provide the right candidate with strong communication skills including using PowerPoint, effective event promotion, and compelling presentation techniques. The position is a minimum of 6-10 hrs/wk for two months, or whatever is required in order to qualify for university credit.

The Forest Ecology Intern will:
Identify potential venues for presentations and promote events through electronic and hardcopy communication
Participate in bi-weekly Portland Progressive Toastmasters gatherings
Work with Outreach Coordinator in creating a PowerPoint presentation
Present the show once a month
Assist Outreach Coordinator in training volunteers to use PowerPoint and present their own shows

Forest Ecology Internship

The Forest Ecology Internship will provide a great opportunity for someone interested in science and who wants to gain skills in using science to shape public policy. In addition to defending Mt. Hood’s forests from logging, Bark is drafting a vision for sustainable management of Mt. Hood National Forest. In order to do this we have begun to compile a collection of scientific literature relevant to forest ecology. The Forest Ecology Intern will manage and grow this collection into a working library pertinent to management direction for Mt. Hood National Forest. The Forest Ecology Intern requires strong reading and writing skills, an understanding of scientific principles, and excellent organizational skills. This position will provide the right candidate with a strong working knowledge of the best available science on Pacific Northwest forests, an understanding of how science impacts public policy in our National Forests, and real-world experience in non-profit operations. The position is a minimum of 6-10 hrs/wk for two months, or whatever is required in order to qualify for university credit.

The Forest Ecology Intern will:
Read scientific literature related to forest ecology including, but not limited to, hydrology, soil ecology, silviculture, botany, and wildlife biology
Work with Outreach Coordinator and Executive Director in rating relevancy of science to Mt. Hood National Forest
Summarize and categorize literature by issue area and relevance
Update and maintain database of scientific literature

Development Internship

About the Internship
The first thing most people learn working in non-profit organizations is the importance of effective fundraising and development. Obtaining fundraising skills and strategy is a great way to stand out in the non-profit job market. Bark has had incredible success with a diverse approach to fundraising, including canvassing, grant writing, member development and events. The Development Intern will assist the Development Coordinator in all aspects of Bark’s development programs. The position is a minimum of 6-10 hrs/wk for two months, or whatever is required in order to qualify for university credit.

The Development Intern will:
Assist the Development Director in all aspects of Bark’s development program.
Research potential donors and prepare strategies for approaching them.
Work with the Fundraising Committee and Development Coordinator in coordinating and promoting special fundraising events.
Aid with membership development including gaining effective writing and editing skills for communicating with our 2,000+ members.
Support the Fundraising Committee and Executive Director in writing effective grants and providing accurate grant coordination and reporting.
Attending regular Fundraising Committee meetings.
Use a sophisticated database to track donor information.
Researching new funding resources for Bark to pursue.

Since its founding in 1999, Bark has helped save 4,660 acres from destruction. Bark monitors and enforces public agency compliance with environmental laws, and educates and engages the public through hikes, presentations, and a TV show about threats to the Mt. Hood ecosystem and strategies to preserve it. Fundamental to Bark’s approach is involving the community in “forest watch” and training individuals to become citizen activists.
