November Ecology Club: Beyond the War on Invasive Species

Date:
Wednesday, November 14, 2018 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Join Tao Orion, author of Beyond the War on Invasive Species: A Permaculture Approach to Ecosystem Restoration, to explore the concept of invasive species from a holistic, systems-based perspective. We'll talk about the influences of climate change, discuss ecosystem succession and disturbance, and look at how historic and current land use including displacement of indigenous management strategies have contributed to proliferation of invasive species. Then we'll use this understanding to discuss how to creatively manage populations of invasive species without the use of herbicides in ways that regenerate ecological function and improve biodiversity.

Tao Orion is the author of Beyond the War on Invasive Species: A Permaculture Approach to Ecosystem Restoration. She teaches permaculture design at Oregon State University and at Aprovecho, a 40-acre nonprofit sustainable-living educational organization. Tao consults on holistic farm, forest, and restoration planning through Resilience Permaculture Design, LLC. She holds a degree in agroecology and sustainable agriculture from UC Santa Cruz, and grows organic fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and animals on her southern Willamette Valley homestead, Viriditas Farm.
